Job Description

SUMMARY: Responsible for managing design department at FLSA location or district, including following FLSA's quality design procedure and work instruction. 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  1. Strong working knowledge of fire sprinkler codes.  RME-G Required, NICET III or NICET IV preferred. Equivalent experience will be considered assuming individual pursues NICET education.    

  2.  Hiring and terminating design employees.

  3.  Teaching computer and drafting skills.

  4.  Using FLSA's Design Review Form, reviews and verifies designs and calculations prior to submittal.

  5.  Assigns projects to designers based on workload demand and maintains design calendar. Insures that projects are submitted on time and accurately and maintains a submittal log.

  6.  Insures that field checks are completed and that projects are listed for material accurately and on time.

  7.  In conjunction with the FLSA technology manager, maintaining design systems and software.

  8.  Helps coordinate material delivery to job sites.

  9.  Assist sales / estimating personnel in estimating design hours for bids.

  10.  Assist design personnel in preparation for NICET tests and correspondence courses.  

  11.  Maintain design department supplies.

  12.  Designs jobs when required.

High School diploma, BA, BS, or engineering degree or experience or related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.


Proven strong working knowledge of personal computers.


Ability to read and write clearly. Ability to present information and respond to questions from managers, customers, AHJs (Authorities Having Jurisdiction) and the general public.


As department head, the design manager is expected to help cultivate the skills of each designer; perform personnel reviews not less than annually; and, create the environment for successful coordination and communication between designer and other FLSA personnel, especially Field Superintendents and Foremen.
